The Challenge
Faced with rigid quality assurance requirements, a world leader in
the production of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) pipe needed to perform
both tensile tests on pipe sections (ASTM D638) and compression
tests on pipe as large as 102" (259 cm) in diameter (ASTM D2412). This
type of piping is used for water supply systems, sanitary sewer lines, power
plant cooling systems and other industrial applications.
The Solution
Instron® supplied a custom SATEC™ Series
150kN universal testing frame with standard 5500 control electronics and Partner
software. This extraordinarily tall frame features
a 108" (274 cm) vertical test opening with 24" (61 cm) between
twin columns and a maximum capacity of 150kN (33,000lb). Additional
stroke to 30" was required for the compression testing applications.
Modified grip faces for SATEC™ Series 30K mechanical
wedge action T-Grips were provided to enable the customer to test
special coupon specimens necessary for the determination of hoop
tensile properties of the piping. An upper compression platen provides loading
of large diameter pipe test sections, 102" diameter to 12" wide, for the
determination of pipe stiffness characteristics.
Hydraulic lifts and clamps simplify crosshead positioning
while an integrated cable management system
neatly routes cabling and hoses at the rear of the machine to
protect them and prevent their interference
with the test space.
