Common Standards for Tensile Tests
Instron manufactures a complete range of tensile testers (also known as pull testers) for determining the ultimate tensile strength of various materials including plastics, metals, rubber, biomedical, and more. Tensile testing systems utilize varying technologies, such as electromechanical, static hydraulic for high capacity tension tests, and dynamic with the capability of performing both static and dynamic tests.
(What is a Tension Test?)
Electromechanical test systems are crosshead-driven systems characterized by the use of pre-loaded ball screws, guidance columns and digital closed-loop position control. Frame configurations include a single column tester; table or dual column model; and floor models.
High-capacity SATEC™ series systems perform tension tests using static hydraulic technology. This family of universal testers includes some of the most rugged and durable machines ever made. These frames are powered by a hydraulic pumping system that moves a piston assembly to provide the forces necessary for testing.
Dynamic systems are capable of performing both static tensile and fatigue tests. The new state-of-the-art ElectroPuls™, a new family of lower-force electrodynamic test instruments, are all-electric and require no air, hydraulics, water or special utilities.

Specialized Tensile Testers
Horizontal Tensile Testing Systems: With testing capacities up to 10 MN, these materials testing machines feature a horizontal test space to accommodate extra long test specimens.
MicroTester: Designed for both static and dynamic testing, the MicroTester performs tensile tests on a variety of miniature materials, specimens and components.
Spring Testers: The SF Series spring testers incorporate all the features required to make spring testing easy, accurate, and efficient at a very competitive price. Designed for load testing all types of coil springs, disc springs, wave springs, leaf springs and spring-type components, this cost-effective series is capable of testing springs from 0.5 kN to 100 kN (112 lbf to 22,500 lbf).
Automated Tensile Testing Using Robotics
Instron’s TestMaster™ Automation System utilizes robotics for improved accuracy and repeatability. Eliminating the possibility of operator error, these automated testing machines are engineered for tension tests on plastics, metals and elastomeric samples.
