When tensile testing steel to ASTM E8, EN 10002-1 or ISO 6892, it is often necessary to test machined specimens. One common type of machined specimen is the shouldered end specimen. Sometimes referred to as a "dumbbell" or "dogbone" specimen, this round specimen type has shouldered ends that are used for gripping the specimen during testing.
Most recently we were asked to provide a test system that could be used for tensile testing of 0.505 inch diameter, shouldered end specimens. Since the maximum load requirement was nearly 40,000 lbf, we decided to supply a SATEC
™ series
300LX load frame with split sleeve shouldered end specimen holders and our newly developed
Universal Spherical Tension Adapters (USTA).
The single test space and dual acting actuator of the 300LX make it easy for operators to install the specimens. The split sleeve shouldered end specimen holders allow for very quick changing of test specimens. They also contain the ends of the broken specimen during failure providing for additional operator safety. The USTA assemblies allow for the specimen to self-align during loading, easily meeting the alignment requirements of ASTM E8, EN 10002-1 and ISO 6892.
For accurately measuring strain, we supplied a 2630 style clip-on extensometer with a 2 inch gauge length.
Partner™ materials testing software provided all the necessary control parameters and calculation algorithms to satisfy the forementioned test standards. In addtion, Partner's test wizard templates offered very simple test setup and efficient testing operations.
